Great Dane Exercise Needs: How Much, What Kind, by Age

1 min read

Danes need moderate daily exercise — but bloat protocol and slow growth shape everything. Here's the guide.

Great Danes are giant — and bloat-prone. Exercise rules are strict around meals; puppy growth must be slow; adult activity is moderate, not intense.

Daily exercise guide

AgeTotal dailyIntensity
Puppy 8-24 monthsLimited / age-appropriateVery low — joint critical
Adult (2-5)45-90 minModerate
Senior (6+ — Danes age fast)30-60 minLow-moderate

What makes Dane exercise different

Bloat protocol is non-negotiable. Highest-risk breed. No vigorous exercise 1 hr before/after meals. Slow-feeder, floor-level bowl, multiple meals.

Slow growth, late high-impact. Giant-breed puppy nutrition + minimal jumping or stairs until 18-24 months. Even age-appropriate exercise is short and gentle.

Joint preservation lifelong. Minimize repetitive impact; lean body condition.

Heat moderate-low. Big body + short coat — overheats faster than expected. Cool times.

Best activities

  • Walks (multiple short over one long).
  • Slow hikes on flat trails.
  • Swimming (excellent — joint-friendly cardio).
  • Light scent / nose work.
  • Cart / draft work for trained adults.

Activities to avoid

  • Vigorous play around mealtime (bloat — life-threatening).
  • High-impact agility / jumping.
  • Long sustained jogging.
  • Forced running with bike/horse.

Sample weekly schedule

  • Daily: 30-min morning walk + 30-min evening walk + indoor enrichment
  • Weekend: gentle 60-min hike or swim

FAQ

Can Danes run with me?

No — bad fit. Their build doesn’t tolerate sustained jogging well. Walking and swimming yes.

Bloat exercise rule?

No vigorous exercise within 1 hour before or after meals. This rule is real and life-saving.

Puppy exercise — how restricted?

Very. Free play in a yard is fine; no forced walks, no stairs marathons, no jumping under 18-24 months.
