Pembroke Welsh Corgi Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

Corgis are obesity-prone with long backs. Here's the portion chart with the spinal-health-specific rules.

Corgis are short-legged herding dogs with the proportions of a much larger breed compressed into a small package. Combined with food motivation, this means weight is a real spinal-health issue. Lean body condition isn’t optional.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activity
22 lb (10 kg)1 cup1 ¼ cups
26 lb (12 kg)1 ¼ cups1 ½ cups
30 lb (14 kg)1 ½ cups1 ¾ cups

Split into 2 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered.

Puppy (8 weeks - 10 months)

Standard puppy formula. 3-4 meals until 4 months, then 2-3.

Senior (8+ years)

Adult -10%. Watch for DM (degenerative myelopathy) signs — gradual hind-end weakness. Joint support helpful.

What makes feeding a Corgi different

Long back + short legs = weight-sensitive spine. Like Dachshunds, even modest excess weight stresses the spine. Lean body condition (BCS 4-5/9) is non-negotiable.

Food motivation. Corgis love food and beg expertly. Treat budget rigorously.

Active despite short legs. Pet Corgis often look low-energy; many actually want substantial activity. Mental enrichment via puzzle feeders helps.

DM (degenerative myelopathy). Some lines carry SOD1 mutation. Genetic testing available. Diet doesn’t directly affect, but lean body reduces overall systemic stress.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Obesity: portion control + treats counted.
  • IVDD: lean weight + minimize jumping on/off furniture (use ramps).
  • Hip dysplasia: lean weight + appropriate puppy formula.
  • DM: not nutrition-preventable; lean body supportive.

Sample daily routine

Adult Corgi, 26 lb:

  • 7am: ⅔ cup breakfast (slow feeder)
  • 7:30am: 30-min walk
  • 5pm: 30-min walk + 10 min puzzle work
  • 6pm: ⅔ cup dinner
  • Treats: 5-7 small training treats / day max
  • Ramp for couch / bed access

What to track in Flok

  • Weight monthly (1 lb is real on a Corgi).

  • Hind-end mobility (early DM signs).
  • Treats counted.

FAQ

Why are Corgis obesity-prone?

Combination of food motivation, deceptively low metabolism, and short legs (people under-exercise them, assuming they don’t need much). Pet Corgis often need 1-1.5 hours of activity daily.

Should I get the DM genetic test?

Useful for breeding stock or if family history. For pet Corgis, talk to vet about whether it changes management.

What about ramps?

Recommended. Jumping down from couches / beds is a documented IVDD trigger in long-back breeds.
