Dachshund Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

For Dachshunds, weight is spinal health. Here's the portion chart with the long-back-specific feeding rules.

For Dachshunds, weight management isn’t about looks — it’s about the spine. Up to 25-30% of Dachshunds will experience IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) in their lifetime. Lean body condition is the single strongest modifiable risk factor.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activity
11 lb (5 kg) — Mini½ cup¾ cup
16 lb (7 kg)¾ cup1 cup
22 lb (10 kg)1 cup1 ¼ cups
32 lb (15 kg) — Standard1 ¼ cups1 ½ cups

Split into 2 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered dogs.

Puppy (8 weeks - 10 months)

Small-breed puppy formula (Mini) or standard puppy formula (Standard). 3 meals until 4 months, then 2-3.

Senior (8+ years)

Adult portion -10%. Senior diets with omega-3 and joint support helpful. Watch for early IVDD signs (yelping, reluctance to jump, dragging back legs).

What makes feeding a Dachshund different

Long back = weight is spinal health. Even 1-2 lb over ideal noticeably stresses the spine. Lean body condition (BCS 4-5/9) is non-negotiable. The Dachshund IVDD Resource maintained by veterinary specialists explicitly cites weight management as primary prevention.

Pancreatitis sensitivity. Dachshunds are over-represented in pancreatitis cases. Avoid high-fat diets, fatty table scraps, and trash access.

Dental issues. Small mouths crowd teeth. Dental disease is common; small kibble or dental-formula kibble helps. Daily brushing is the gold standard.

Food allergies. Skin and ear flare-ups → consider elimination diet conversation with vet.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • IVDD: lean weight + no jumping on/off furniture + ramps for couches/beds.
  • Pancreatitis: low-fat diet + no fatty leftovers + no garbage access.
  • Obesity: rigorous portion control; Dachshunds beg expertly.
  • Dental: small-kibble formula + daily brushing.

Sample daily routine

Adult standard Dachshund, 22 lb:

  • 7am: ½ cup breakfast (small-kibble formula)
  • 8am: 20-min walk (no jumping)
  • 5pm: 20-30 min walk / play
  • 6pm: ½ cup dinner
  • Daily teeth brushing
  • No couch jumping (use ramps)

What to track in Flok

  • Weight weekly (1 lb is a real percentage on a Mini).
  • BCS monthly.
  • Back / mobility signs (early IVDD).
  • Treats counted.
  • Pancreatitis episodes / risky exposures (trash, fatty foods).

FAQ

How can I tell if my Dachshund is overweight?

Feel ribs easily, see waist from above, see tucked abdomen from side. Even slight excess on this body type matters.

My Dachshund yelps when picked up — emergency?

Yes — possible disc disease. Strict crate rest until vet visit (don’t let them jump or run). IVDD is treatable but time-sensitive — neurologic deficits worsen fast.

What about ramps for couches and beds?

Strongly recommended. Jumping down from height is a documented trigger for IVDD episodes in predisposed breeds.
