Poodle Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight (Standard, Mini, Toy)

Poodles span Toy to Standard sizes with size-specific feeding. Here's the chart for all three varieties.

Poodles come in three sizes — Standard (45-70 lb), Miniature (15-20 lb), Toy (4-7 lb) — with different feeding considerations per size.

What makes feeding a Poodle different

Standards are deep-chested. Bloat protocol applies: 2-3 meals, no peri-meal vigorous exercise, slow-feeder, floor-level bowl. Discuss prophylactic gastropexy with vet.

Allergies common across sizes. Skin / ear / paw flares → vet conversation. Poodles are also a common parent breed in doodle-mix lines, where allergy patterns persist.

Hypothyroidism + Addison’s disease. Both occur in Poodles — slow weight changes warrant vet bloodwork.

Dental (Toy/Mini). Small mouths; daily brushing + dental-formula kibble.

Hypoglycemia (Toy puppies). Toy puppies — frequent meals, never skip.

FDA DCM watch. Standards have appeared in FDA’s DCM-and-grain-free reports. Talk to vet about diet choice; AAFCO-feeding-trial-validated formulas preferred.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Bloat (Standards): meal-splitting + no peri-meal exertion + slow-feeder.
  • Allergies: elimination diet for chronic skin / ear flares.
  • Addison’s disease: subtle weight changes, lethargy → vet bloodwork.
  • DCM (Standards on grain-free / boutique): avoid pending FDA review.
  • Dental (Toy/Mini): small kibble + daily brushing.

Sample daily routine

Adult Standard Poodle, 60 lb:

  • 7am: 1 ¼ cups breakfast (slow feeder, floor-level)
  • 7:30am: 30-min walk
  • 12pm: training session
  • 5pm: 30-min run / play
  • 6pm: 1 ¼ cups dinner (no exercise 1 hr after)

FAQ

Are Standards more bloat-prone than other large breeds?

Yes — deep-chested Standards rank in higher GDV-risk tier with German Shepherds, Doberman, Great Dane.

What’s Addison’s disease and how does it relate to feeding?

Adrenal insufficiency. Causes vague weakness, weight loss, vomiting. Vet-managed; not feeding-caused, but appetite changes are a tell.

Should I avoid grain-free for my Poodle?

For Standards, current guidance leans toward AAFCO-validated standard formulas pending FDA DCM review. Talk to vet.
