Bulldog Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight
English Bulldogs are obesity-prone, allergy-prone, and severely brachycephalic. Here's the portion chart with the rules.
English Bulldogs are heavy-set, severely brachycephalic, low-activity, and prone to allergies, GI sensitivities, and breathing-related limitations. Feeding rules are conservative.
Daily portion guide (adult)
| Adult weight | Low activity | Moderate activity |
|---|---|---|
| 40 lb (18 kg) | 1 ½ cups | 1 ¾ cups |
| 50 lb (23 kg) | 1 ¾ cups | 2 cups |
| 55 lb (25 kg) | 2 cups | 2 ¼ cups |
Split into 2 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered. Bulldogs over-fuel easily — match portion to actual (low) activity.
Puppy (8 weeks - 12 months)
Medium / large-breed puppy formula. 3-4 meals until 4 months, then 2-3.
Senior (7+ years)
Adult -10-15%. Joint support; cardiac and respiratory monitoring.
What makes feeding a Bulldog different
Severe brachycephaly. Slow-feeder mandatory. Slight elevation acceptable. No vigorous activity post-meal. Heat intolerance significant — never feed heavily before exertion in heat.
Obesity is a major risk. Excess weight worsens BOAS (breathing), joint issues, and overall lifespan. Lean body condition is the highest-leverage management.
Severe allergies. Bulldogs are allergy-poster-children. Skin folds, ear infections, paw licking → almost always allergy-related. Vet-supervised elimination diet (8-12 weeks) is the diagnostic.
GI sensitivities. Soft stools, occasional loose stools at baseline. Stable diet, probiotics, slow transitions.
Common breed concerns and feeding
- BOAS / brachy issues: lean weight is critical management.
- Allergies: skin / ear / paw / fold issues → elimination diet.
- Joint disease: lean weight protects.
- GI sensitivities: stable formula, probiotics.
Sample daily routine
Adult Bulldog, 50 lb:
- 7am: ¾ cup breakfast (slow feeder)

- 6pm: ¾ cup dinner
What to track in Flok
- Skin folds / ear / paw flare-ups.
- Stool consistency.
- Breathing changes.
- Weight monthly.
- Heat tolerance episodes.
FAQ
My Bulldog itches constantly — food allergy?
Possibly. Skin / ear / paw flares are classic allergy patterns. Vet elimination diet for 8-12 weeks is the test.
Are Bulldogs harder to feed than other breeds?
Yes — combination of severe brachy, allergies, GI sensitivity, and obesity tendency makes them one of the more nutrition-dependent breeds.
What about grain-free for Bulldogs?
Talk to your vet. Per FDA DCM review, AAFCO-feeding-trial-validated formulas preferred.
