Dachshund Exercise Needs: How Much, What Kind, by Age
Dachshunds need exercise — but jumping and stairs threaten the back. Here's the breed-specific guide.
Dachshunds are scent hounds in compact bodies. They love walking and sniffing. The challenge isn’t getting them to exercise — it’s keeping the exercise spine-safe. IVDD (back disease) is the breed-defining concern.
Daily exercise guide
| Age | Total daily | Intensity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy 8-16 weeks | Short play sessions only | Very low | No stairs, no furniture jumping ever |
| Puppy 4-12 months | 20-30 min | Low | Build slowly; protect back |
| Adult | 30-60 min | Low-moderate | Sniff walks, slow exploration |
| Senior (8+) | 30-45 min | Low | Watch back signs; consider hydrotherapy |
What makes Dachshund exercise different
Spine protection is rule #1. IVDD risk is high (up to 25-30% lifetime). Avoid:
- Jumping on/off furniture (use ramps).
- Stairs marathons.
- Twisting / sharp turns at speed.
- Any high-impact activity.
Lean weight is the modifiable IVDD factor. See Dachshund Feeding.
Sniffing satisfies them. Scent-driven walks (let them lead, smell everything) often more enriching than fast pace.
Mini vs Standard scaling. Mini Dachshunds (under 11 lb) need shorter sessions; Standard (16-32 lb) closer to upper end of the range.
Best activities
- Sniff walks (slow, exploration-led).
- Scent / nose games.
- Hide-and-seek with treats.
- Hydrotherapy / supervised swim (low-impact, joint-friendly).
- Light agility ON HOMEMADE LOW JUMPS only after vet clearance (not standard agility).
Activities to limit / avoid
- Jumping on/off couches, beds (use ramps mandatory).
- Stairs (ramp or carry on uneven flights).
- Off-leash sprint after squirrels (they’ll do it; their back may not recover).
- Hiking with steep elevation changes.
- Fetch on slick floors (twist injuries).
Signs to stop / vet immediately
- Yelping when picked up.
- Reluctance to walk or jump.
- Hunched back.
- Dragging back legs.
- Loss of bladder control.
These are IVDD signs. Strict crate rest until vet visit. Time-sensitive — neurologic deficits worsen fast.
Sample weekly schedule
- Daily: 15-min morning sniff walk + 15-min evening sniff walk
- Mid-week: scent game / hide-treats indoor session
- Weekend: longer sniff walk (45 min, flat ground) or supervised swim
What to track in Flok
- Daily exercise minutes.
- Surface types (no slick floors, no jumping).
- Back / mobility signs.
- Weight monthly (lean = spine-protective).
FAQ
Is fetch okay for Dachshunds?
Low-key fetch on grass, controlled, with no twisting at speed. Not the breed’s best activity.
Can Dachshunds hike?
Flat or gentle trails, with ramps for any obstacles. Steep / rocky hikes risk back injury.
Hydrotherapy?
Excellent option for adult and senior Dachshunds with vet clearance. Joint-friendly cardio.
