Beagle Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

Beagles are food-motivated and obesity-prone. Here's the portion chart with the discipline rules that matter.

Beagles will eat anything, anytime, in any quantity, and act offended if denied. Their food drive is a feature for tracking work and a liability for waistlines. Discipline matters more here than in most breeds.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activityHigh activity
20 lb (9 kg)¾ cup1 cup1 ¼ cups
25 lb (11 kg)1 cup1 ¼ cups1 ½ cups
30 lb (14 kg)1 ¼ cups1 ½ cups1 ¾ cups

Split into 2 meals. No free-feeding. Reduce 10% for neutered dogs.

Puppy (8 weeks - 12 months)

Standard puppy formula. 3-4 meals until 4 months, 3 until 6, then 2.

Senior (8+ years)

Adult portion -10%. Joint support helpful — Beagles are IVDD-prone (long-back conformation). Lean weight protects the spine.

What makes feeding a Beagle different

Food drive. Beagles will counter-surf, garbage-raid, and eat themselves into pancreatitis given access. Container-store the food, child-lock the trash, and treat-budget rigorously.

Obesity is health priority #1. Excess weight stresses the long Beagle back (IVDD risk), accelerates joint disease, and drops energy. Many vets see «average» Beagles arriving at BCS 6-7/9.

Counts everything as food. Treats, table scraps, dropped Cheerios — Beagles convert all of it into calories. Daily treat budget should be ≤10% of total calories, with the same portion-control rigor as meals.

Use food motivation positively. Slow-feeders, food puzzles, scent-work games, and meal-spreading throughout training give Beagles mental engagement and slow eating without adding calories.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Obesity: portion control + treats counted + no free-feeding.
  • IVDD (back): lean weight + minimize jumping on/off furniture.
  • Hypothyroidism: slow weight gain despite normal feeding → vet bloodwork.
  • Pancreatitis: rigorous trash control; no fatty table scraps.

Sample daily routine

Adult Beagle, 25 lb, moderate activity:

  • 7am: ½ cup breakfast (slow feeder)
  • 8am: 30-min walk (scent work, sniff time matters)
  • 12pm: 5-min training session (1-2 small treats)
  • 5pm: 45-min walk / play
  • 6pm: ½ cup dinner (food puzzle)
  • Treats budget: 5-7 small training treats / day max

What to track in Flok

  • Treats actually given (Beagles inflate the count, owners undercount).
  • Weekly weigh-ins.
  • BCS monthly.
  • Counter-surfing / garbage incidents (vet-relevant if pancreatitis develops).

FAQ

My Beagle acts starved 24/7 — am I underfeeding?

Probably not. Beagle hunger drive is breed-typical. Use BCS and weight, not their begging. If BCS is 4-5 and weight is stable, the portion is correct.

How do I know if my Beagle is overweight?

Feel ribs without pressing — should be like the back of your hand. Check for visible waist from above and tucked abdomen from side. If not, BCS is ≥6.

What about food puzzles?

Excellent fit for Beagles. Slows eating, provides mental enrichment, satisfies food drive without adding calories.
