Bernese Mountain Dog Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

Berners are large, deep-chested, and short-lived. Here's the portion chart with breed-specific feeding rules.

Berners are large, deep-chested, gentle, and unfortunately short-lived (median 7-8 years per Berner-Garde Foundation). Cancer is the leading cause of death. Lean body condition and quality nutrition matter more here than in many breeds.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activity
70 lb (32 kg)3 cups3 ½ cups
90 lb (41 kg)3 ½ cups4 cups
110 lb (50 kg)4 cups4 ½ cups

Split into 2-3 meals for bloat risk reduction. Reduce 10% for neutered.

Puppy (8 weeks - 18 months)

Large-breed puppy formula (controlled calcium / phosphorus). Slow growth = healthier joints. 3-4 meals until 6 months, 2-3 thereafter.

Senior (5+ years — Berners age fast)

Reduce 10-15%. Joint support, omega-3, dental care. Watch for cancer-related signs (lumps, weight changes, lethargy).

What makes feeding a Berner different

Bloat protocol matters. Deep-chested breed with elevated GDV risk. 2-3 meals, no peri-meal vigorous exercise, slow-feeder, floor-level bowl, discuss prophylactic gastropexy with your vet.

Slow puppy growth. Large-breed puppy formula until 18 months. Rapid growth strongly correlates with developmental orthopedic disease.

Lean body, every day. Excess weight worsens hip / elbow dysplasia and may correlate with shortened lifespan. BCS 4-5/9 lifelong.

Diet quality bias. Berners are at high cancer risk. Quality protein, omega-3 EPA/DHA, and AAFCO feeding-trial-validated formulas. Avoid grain-free / boutique formulas pending FDA DCM review.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Bloat / GDV: meal-splitting + no peri-meal exertion + slow-feeder + floor-level + gastropexy discussion.
  • Hip / elbow dysplasia: lean weight + large-breed puppy formula.
  • Cancer: lean body + quality nutrition + omega-3.
  • Shorter lifespan: nothing fully prevents this, but weight management is the most-modifiable factor.

Sample daily routine

Adult Berner, 90 lb, moderate activity:

  • 6:30am: 1 ¼ cups breakfast (slow feeder, floor-level)
  • 7-8am: 30-min walk
  • 12pm: 1 ¼ cups mid-day
  • 4pm: 20-min walk
  • 6:30pm: 1 ½ cups dinner (no exercise for 1 hr after)

What to track in Flok

  • Mealtimes vs exercise (bloat protocol).
  • Weight monthly.
  • Lumps / bumps (catch early).
  • Joint stiffness mornings.
  • Energy / appetite changes (cancer early signs).

FAQ

Should I get prophylactic gastropexy for my Berner?

Reasonable consideration given bloat risk. Discuss timing with your vet (often combined with neuter).

What about cancer-protective diets?

No diet «prevents» cancer. Lean body condition + omega-3 + AAFCO-trial-validated quality nutrition is the evidence-based baseline. Avoid grain-free / boutique pending FDA review.

Are Berners obesity-prone?

Moderate tendency. Their gentle, low-key personality means they often get under-exercised. Match portion to actual activity.
