Rottweiler Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

Rottweilers need slow puppy growth and bloat-aware feeding. Here's the portion chart with breed-specific rules.

Rottweilers are powerful working dogs — broad-chested, muscular, prone to bloat, joint disease, cardiac stenosis, and bone cancer. Feeding rules center on slow puppy growth, lean adult body, and bloat protocol.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activity
85 lb (38 kg)3 ½ cups4 cups
105 lb (48 kg)4 cups4 ½ cups
125 lb (57 kg)4 ½ cups5 cups

Split into 2-3 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered.

Puppy (8 weeks - 18 months)

Large-breed puppy formula. Slow growth is critical — Rotties have high developmental orthopedic disease risk if over-fed.

3-4 meals until 6 months, then 2-3 to 14-18 months.

Senior (7+ years — Rotties age fast)

Adult -10%. Joint support, cardiac monitoring, watch for lameness (osteosarcoma can present as «just an old-dog limp»).

What makes feeding a Rottweiler different

Slow puppy growth. Large-breed puppy formula until 14-18 months. Rotties are high-risk for hip / elbow dysplasia; rapid growth dramatically worsens odds.

Bloat protocol. Deep-chested. 2-3 meals, no peri-meal vigorous exercise, slow-feeder, floor-level bowl. Discuss prophylactic gastropexy with vet.

Cardiac concerns. Subaortic stenosis (SAS) is a known breed predisposition. Annual cardiac auscultation; echocardiogram if murmur detected. Diet doesn’t cause / cure but lean body reduces cardiac stress.

Joint health = weight management. Excess weight is the modifiable factor for hip / elbow dysplasia management.

Parvovirus susceptibility. Rotties have higher-than-average parvo morbidity. Strict adherence to vaccination schedule (see Rottweiler Vaccination Schedule).

Osteosarcoma awareness. Lameness in adult Rotties always warrants vet investigation — osteosarcoma is over-represented in the breed.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Bloat / GDV: meal-splitting + slow-feeder + no peri-meal exercise + gastropexy discussion.
  • Hip / elbow dysplasia: lean weight + slow-growth puppy formula.
  • SAS: annual cardiac workup; lean body.
  • Osteosarcoma: lameness = vet visit, not «old age».
  • Parvo: strict vaccination adherence.

Sample daily routine

Adult Rottie, 105 lb, moderate activity:

  • 7am: 1 ½ cups breakfast (slow feeder)
  • 7:30am: 30-min walk
  • 12pm: 1 ½ cups mid-day
  • 5pm: 30-min walk
  • 6pm: 2 cups dinner (no exercise 1 hr after)

What to track in Flok

  • Mealtimes vs exercise window.
  • Weight monthly.
  • Lameness or limp (osteosarcoma flag).
  • Cardiac symptoms (cough, exercise intolerance).
  • Vaccination dates (parvo critical).

FAQ

Should I get gastropexy for my Rottweiler?

Reasonable consideration given bloat risk. Discuss with vet, often combined with neuter.

Why is parvo risk higher in Rotties?

Documented breed-level susceptibility. Don’t deviate from vet’s vaccination protocol — full puppy series + boosters.

My adult Rottie is limping — wait or vet?

Vet. Persistent lameness in adult Rotties always warrants imaging — osteosarcoma is a real possibility.
