Pug Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight
Pugs are severely brachycephalic and obesity-prone. Here's the portion chart with the rules that actually matter.
Pugs are severely brachycephalic, obesity-prone, and low-activity by default. Feeding rules are conservative — most pet Pugs eat too much for their actual exertion.
Daily portion guide (adult)
| Adult weight | Low activity | Moderate activity |
|---|---|---|
| 14 lb (6 kg) | ⅔ cup | ¾ cup |
| 16 lb (7 kg) | ¾ cup | ⅞ cup |
| 18 lb (8 kg) | ⅞ cup | 1 cup |
Split into 2 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered.
Puppy (8 weeks - 10 months)
Small / medium-breed puppy formula. 3-4 meals until 4 months, then 2-3.
Senior (8+ years)
Adult -10%. Joint support, eye care.
What makes feeding a Pug different
Severe brachycephaly. Slow-feeder mandatory. Slight elevation acceptable. Never feed before vigorous exertion in heat — Pug + heat + full stomach is a real risk.
Obesity is the management priority. Excess weight worsens BOAS (breathing), joint issues, eye prolapse risk, lifespan. Lean BCS 4-5/9 is non-negotiable.
Heat sensitivity. Pugs overheat easily. Match exercise (and therefore portion) to actual conditions.
Eye sensitivity. Diet doesn’t directly affect, but eye-area cleanup after eating helps reduce skin / eye irritation.
Pug Dog Encephalitis (necrotizing meningoencephalitis). Genetic; not nutrition-related. Mention here for breed completeness.
Common breed concerns and feeding
- BOAS / brachy issues: lean weight is critical management.
- Obesity: rigorous portion control + treats counted.
- Heat tolerance: limit exertion in heat regardless of «calorie need».
- Joint disease: lean weight protects.
Sample daily routine
Adult Pug, 16 lb:
- 7am: ½ cup breakfast (slow feeder)
- 7:15am: 15-min easy walk (cool times only)
- 5pm: 15-min walk
- 6pm: ½ cup dinner
What to track in Flok
- Breathing changes (snoring, exercise tolerance).
- Heat tolerance episodes.
- Weight monthly.
- Eye discharge / wrinkle hygiene.
FAQ
My Pug acts hungry all the time — am I underfeeding?
Pugs are food-motivated and persistent. Use BCS and weight, not their begging. If BCS is 4-5 and weight is stable, the portion is correct.
Can my Pug exercise more if I feed more?
Pugs have heat-and-exertion limits regardless of fitness. Don’t try to «work off» extra calories — manage portions instead.
What about brachycephalic surgery (BOAS correction)?
Common procedure for symptomatic Pugs. Talk to vet about timing and which interventions fit (e.g. nares widening, palate shortening).
