Havanese Feeding Chart: Portions by Age and Weight

2 min read

Havanese are companion toys with dental and allergy considerations. Here's the portion chart.

Havanese are friendly companion toys — long-lived, generally healthy, prone to dental issues and the occasional food allergy. Feeding rules are toy-breed standard with extra dental focus.

Daily portion guide (adult)

Adult weightLow activityModerate activity
8 lb (3.6 kg)½ cup⅔ cup
11 lb (5 kg)⅔ cup¾ cup
13 lb (6 kg)¾ cup1 cup

Split into 2 meals. Reduce 10% for neutered.

Puppy (8 weeks - 10 months)

Small-breed puppy formula. 3-4 meals until 4 months, then 2-3. Toy puppies are mild hypoglycemia risk — don’t skip meals.

Senior (10+ years — Havanese age slowly)

Adult -10%. Dental and joint care.

What makes feeding a Havanese different

Dental disease. Small mouths, crowded teeth — daily brushing + small kibble + dental-formula matter.

Allergies. Less common than some breeds but possible. Skin / paw / ear flares → vet conversation.

Hypothyroidism. Slow weight gain despite normal feeding → vet bloodwork.

Long-coated grooming intersection. Diet-related health (skin, allergies) shows in coat condition. Quality omega-3 + complete-balanced AAFCO-feeding-trial-validated food.

Common breed concerns and feeding

  • Dental: small-kibble + daily brushing + dental cleanings.
  • Allergies: monitor; elimination diet if recurring.
  • Patellar luxation: lean weight + minimize jumping.

Moderate tendency. Easy keepers — match portion to actual activity.

What about dental treats?

VOHC-approved dental products help but don’t replace brushing.
