Common questions
When should my puppy or kitten start vaccinations?
Most puppies start their first DHPP between 6 and 8 weeks. Most kittens start their first FVRCP between 6 and 8 weeks (US) or 8 to 9 weeks (UK and EU). Use the tool above with your pet's age and country to get the exact next-due date.
What is the difference between DHPP and FVRCP?
DHPP is the canine combined core vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus). FVRCP is the feline combined core vaccine (viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia). Each is the universal first-year core for its species.
Can I skip vaccines?
You can, but you increase your pet's risk of preventable disease (parvovirus in puppies, panleukopenia in kittens). Core vaccines should not be skipped. Non-core is a conversation with your vet.
Is rabies required everywhere?
Required by law in most US states after 16 weeks (dogs and cats). Not routine for domestic UK pets. Required for the EU pet passport when crossing borders within Europe.
Should my indoor-only kitten get FeLV?
AAFP recommends FeLV for every kitten through the first-year booster, since indoor plans often change. After year one, confirmed indoor-only adult cats can usually drop FeLV.
What is the difference between Lepto 2 and Lepto 4?
Lepto 4 covers four leptospirosis strains (Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Australis, Grippotyphosa); Lepto 2 covers two. Most UK clinics transitioned to Lepto 4 in 2025. Cats do not need Leptospirosis.
Can I delay a vaccine?
Usually yes, by a week or two. Longer delays compromise immunity. Always confirm timing with the clinic that treats your pet.
